5 Big, Fat Food Lies

Now that's a pyramid! If you don't believe you've been lied to the food industry and Big Ag, do yourself a favor and see Food, Inc, Fathead, Fresh, The Movie, read Weston Price, Paleo.com, everything by the Dr's Eads and Robb Wolf's blog about food quality and nutrition. Once you're good and mad you'll understand where these following things come from and why they're lies.
1. Low fat is good for you/Fat is evil. Nothing could be more wrong-headed. Fat is what your body uses for fuel. Not only is it vital to your health and performance, eating fat does not make you fat. Too many high-glycemic index carbs (read: sugar) make you fat. Carbs, not fat. Sugar. OK?
2. High fiber and whole grains are the cornerstone of a healthy diet. Not so much. Gluten will ruin your digestion faster than any other non-food out there. And the reason you need so much fiber is because of all the grains you're eating. Mix flour and water and you get - paste. Of course you need more fiber.
3. Red meat is bad/Soy is good. Soy is of the devil. It's not people food. People are meant to eat meat. Sorry, but it's true. True on a biological level, true on a historical, cultural, physiological and intuitive levels, too. Read this.
4. Calorie restriction is the only way to lose weight. What!?!! Ever been on a calorie restrictive diet? It sucks. And if you lost weight you gained it right back when the "diet" was over. Eat, for heaven's sake! If you're hungry, have some protein and fat, maybe a little fruit. You'll lose more weight faster by eating than you will by starving. Why don't you hear this more often? 1, the diet industry doesn't want you to know and 2, all the slender, healthy people are at the beach. Hurry, you can catch up with them.
5. Cholesterol, especially from eggs and meat, is bad. Once and for all let's put this to rest. Cholesterol is vital to every cell in the body. Your body will make cholesterol if it doesn't get enough, though it's unnecessary extra work. Eat the whole egg, have a nice steak and get enough fat and cholesterol.
These are the big chunks. There is lots of support and documentation at the sites linked above. You don't have to believe me, it's all out there.
